The winter at valley forge
There was actually no battle fought at Valley Forge. It was a big turning point in the war. The patriots were at a major loss. The soldiers were bloody, beaten, cold, battle weary, and ready to quit. General washington even said, "If the army does not get help soon, in all likelihood it will disband." The soldiers were hungry, freezing and uncertain. Many soldiers deserted, and many died.
In February, the weather somewhat eased. In March, General Nathanael Greene was appointed head of the Dismisal Commisary Department. Mysteriously food and supplies started to com rolling in. The troops were strengthened and turned into a fighting force with the help of Baron von Steuben. On June 19, 1778 a "new" army, anxious to fight, went from Valley Forge to New Jershey.
